february 2025

february is tapestry.

don’t they say we all start as strangers? like looking in a mirror for the first time, we begin by looking for ourselves in each other. strangers becoming friends, becoming part of time, becoming part of the great work being made. we impart to each other the wisdom of our inner worlds. we collect bits and pieces of people in time, we think on who we used to be, we find in ourselves the threads of all who we have come to know. we fit together somehow, interwoven!

the mixtape project is a way for us to shed light on our inner worlds through the art that makes us feel less like strangers. this month, we are exhibiting our outer worlds through people who now live within us, too. we proudly present to you a tapestry of work made by our friends!

reflections

how sweet to have been able to weave together this collection of gems, building a chest of treasures to which we have our own key! i hope the mixtape project is a home for my friends’ art that they return to many times. thinking of a tapestry, i just keep thinking about this odd conversation i had with a stranger…i was telling my friend how i keep seeing spiders on me or near me, usually at night, often crawling across my pillow or descending from a web and pausing in front of my face. the stranger who overheard offered a spiritual thought: that there is a void in me that the spiders are drawn to, that they are coming to me to build a web, and each spider’s thread represents a thread of the potential beauty and joy in my life. now who can really say, right? but i just keep thinking about it. i suppose the spiders are making a tapestry for me…and through this compilation project, i see that maybe my friends have already done the same.

sum

i can’t think of a much more precious gift in this life than being able to experience a friend’s art. to share in a world closer to theirs, to see your own world change because of it. these artistic offerings speak for themselves, so sum & i will let you absorb and be with them.

but, i will put one thing out in connection with this month’s project. a line in carole king’s song tapestry, which i love so much, goes like this: “a tapestry to feel and see, impossible to hold.” how grateful i am to see and to feel these tapestries! we can only truly carry our own, but perhaps we can help each other gather our threads. which make up, after all, the fabric of the universe.
